The end of the school year, a major shift in kids schedules, restless little ones, Summer looming. Exhausted, Overwhelmed?! Swoop those cherubs up in your arms and take a drive to Heisler Park in Laguna Beach. The park offers majestic views of the ocean as you stroll high a top the Pacific Ocean upon some of Laguna’s magnificent cliffs. There is entertaining people watching of artists immersed in their craft to sunbathers. Picnicking to barbequing are available. Spend the day! Roam into downtown Laguna and back. Students ranging from fourth to sixth grade at Springbrook Elementary School in Irvine proudly represent The Springbrook Ambassadors. The group was established as the school’s leadership program. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, this compassionate team of children chose to represent one of their own for their annual Day of Service project.

Michael Fullmer is eight years old, in third grade, and is a fellow student at Springbrook Elementary. Mikey, as he is affectionately called, suffers from a rare skin disorder referred to as epidermolysis bullosa. The disease causes skin to tear and blister easily. Mikey’s parents painstakingly wrap him in bandages daily to help to keep his skin from doing just this.

Nearly 80 students comprised of the Springbrook Amabassadors combined with South Lake Middle School and University Park Elementary set up a snack and lemonade stand on MLK Day on Mikey’s behalf in order to raise funds to apply toward research for epidermolysis bullosa. Motorists passing by the corner of Greenmoor and East Yale Loop in Irvine were so moved by the efforts of these deeply empathetic children to the point that their contributions culminated into a grand total of $1,141.00! The EB Research Partnership was founded by Mikey’s parents when they merged their fundraising arm with a New York families organization that too have a son suffering from the same disease.

O.C.’s Hair Police would like to recognize the unconditional kindness of the students of The Springbrook Ambassadors as our most recent In It To Win It recipients while we offer our support of their efforts toward their schoolmate, Mikey, with a donation to EB Research in their name. So often, we bypass the power of a child’s heart in our busy days as they remain before us patiently awaiting to be called upon. O.C.’s Hair Police encourages taking a moment to glance their way to embellish in this gift for as Henry Ward Beecher once stated, “Children are the hand by which we take hold of heaven.”

Family Fun…. A Whale of a Time!

Hey Kids, tell your parents you have an idea that would be a “Whale” of a good time for only $5.00!! Beginning January 24^th, the Dana Wharf and The Wyland Foundation will join together in offering a 2 child p/one paying adult package at an incredible offer of $5 p/kid, ages 3-12. Each child will enjoy a 2 hour whale watching trip on the 95 ft. Dana Pride while receiving an art lesson and gift from Wyland’s Studio prior to their voyage. To enhance your trip, Science Kids offers “fun facts” about whales.

The whale migration along our coastline is occurring right now! From January 1, 2015 to January 13, 2015 the Newport Landing Whale Watching Company has reported spotting 68 whales off our local coast while nearly 80% have been Grey Whales with Killer Whales, or Orca’s, “spouting” up ten-fold!

During the early winter, the Grey Whale migrates south to breed in the warm seas along the Mexican coastline wherever they are able to find shallow lagoons. The whale migration seems to be happening in big numbers this year. With this at hand, just maybe Moby Dick will be spotted 164 years after the great white whale was first written about! Share your tall tales of the sea with us upon your return.

Nestled up against a cozy neighborhood in Costa Mesa, the occupants of the unassuming building housing Girls, Inc. thrive. Their joyful sounds at play drown out the bustle of Costa Mesa’s Newport Blvd. a mere two blocks away while the pristine 10 acre Lion’s Park offers itself as a lovely buffer to the hectic life that engulfs city dwellers.

Within the peaceful walls of Girls, Inc., girls of all ages are inspired daily to be “Strong, Smart, and Bold”! Programs such as Y.E.S.S. and S.T.E.M. nurture 138,000 members across the U.S. and Canada by providing them with life-changing experiences and real solutions to the issues that are unique to the challenges that young ladies face on a daily basis.

O.C.’s Hair Police is so impressed with Girls, Inc. and their programs of empowerment therein that we have chosen the Girls, Inc. members of the Costa Mesa location as our current “In It To Win It” recipients. We received 12 essays from the 5^th and 6^th grade young ladies at Girls, Inc. that touched on their summer memories. The vibrant colors depicting their essays in art form served as lively backdrops to their written words. Their respective stories spoke of Y.E.S.S. and/or discussed their experiences through a prism embracing a science like perspective influenced by S.T.E.M. Y.E.S.S. stands for Youth, Empowerment, Self, Sufficiency while S.T.E.M. is an abbreviation for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Both programs celebrate the embodiment of the characteristics that are the basic foundation of being a girl while encouraging them to utilize these attributes toward creating a start up business to embracing the sciences.

These lovely young ladies should be proud of their ability to incorporate a creative flair to the fundamentals of business and the sciences as reflected in their summer tales which popped off the page draped in full color artistry. In the same breathe, the Girls, Inc. organization should be applauded for their efforts to encourage their members to expand their basic thoughts by pushing the limits of their thinking to reach beyond established boundaries to a realm of limitless innovation.

If it is to be true that, “Children are the living messages we send to a time we will not see.” (John W. Whitehead) Then, we can be rest assured that Girls, Inc. is creating a beautiful tomorrow with their message in a bottle of “Strong, Smart, and Bold!” to wash up on the shores of the future for the world to behold.

Day Trip with the family to apple, berry, pumpkin pickin’ country, Oak Glen. This spectacular historic town is nestled in the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains and is a mere 45 to 60 minute drive from Orange County. As you roll into town, the streets are lined with majestic oak trees that shade and guide you while you traverse through the windy roads from farm to farm. The wonderful aromas of home baked morsels fill the air and the sounds of music lift your spirits. In all, it is without question a well worth excursion that will leave you wanting to return for more. Pumpkin picking is now so, don’t hesitate to jump into the car and go!!! HEY KIDS!!!! TAKE A HIKE…WITH YOUR MOM!!!!

Look up, look down, look all around. Find twigs, rocks, leaves, pinecones, whatever, all of it. Create your very own nature scene on a piece of paper with your treasures found. Give it to your Mom. Tell her that you like being with her, tell her thanks, tell her you love her. Ask her if you can go hiking again. Tell her why, like this…”Hey, Mom!”, “Yeah Sweetie?”, “I like being with you. Let’s do that again. I love you.” It’s that simple.
